Going Home

So today is the Sunday before Thanksgiving and I will be returning home to STA either tomorrow afternoon or sometime Tuesday because I have opted to skip accounting for numerous reasons, most of them are because it bores the hell out of me. I have only been back to St. Anthony once since college started and only twice since late July and I find going home seems now even weirder than going back to college. For fall break, none of my friends in my grade were home from college, or so I knew of, and so I only saw a few friends still in high school. This time however, nearly everyone except Aaron Horsager will be home. Even though its only a day or 2 before I depart for home, I've only contacted 2 people to make sure I get to hang out with them. I really wonder how my stay at home is going to be. Will all the kids I knew in high school contact me to hang out with me or will they have forgotten about me? To be completely honest I've lost touch with many of them for a number of reasons but none of them are because I don't want to see or talk to them anymore. It's just weird with everyone at college being excited to go home when I know at least my trip home will be drastically different from the home I remember. Even if all my friends make contact with me(which I hope they do) and everything is fun and isn't awkward, the main street through STA has been redone and my parents have removed 4 tress from my house and replaced them with new ones. This time when I go home, even the appearance of home won't be the same. Although I'm very excited to have a couple days to just relax and not do any homework, I'm anxious to see whether this break will turn out to be any more than that.

Intent vs Impact

I've come to realize that although a person's intentions are important to factor in when you judge their actions, they aren't as important as they used to be. After all, even though a person may want to help to friends work out a problem, they may make things far worse by helping where their help isn't wanted. I'm not going to go into specific examples in my life in case certain people ever find their way to my blog but I will elaborate on one example. A certain college friend of mine, one Ethan Olson, ventured onto the 5th floor of our dorm which is inhabited by all girls late on Saturday night. After a long night of fun, we decided to go visit some friends hanging out on fifth. One of our friends(female) went into the bathroom to go clean out her water bottle of the residue of a certain substance(alcohol) and Ethan, who had been taking funny pictures for several minutes, decided to take a picture of her washing out her water bottle. A little strange yes, but crossing no lines. Than, apparently a girl walked out of the stall that we did not know and walked past us to her room. Let me note that I considered this detail so unimportant that I hardly remembered it when questioned later. Let me also note that boys are not allowed in the girls 5th floor bathroom. The next day, Ethan received an email from the residence life director and the vice president of the college the next day saying he was required to have a meeting with them because of "sexual harassment charges". It turns out the girl walking past us considered our intentions to be sexually harassing and reported Ethan to the school. Upon entering the meeting, Ethan was cleared of all charges because of the ridiculousness of the accusations, but it just goes to show that Intent does not always result in the desired impact.

The day that changed the world

Whether you agree with what happened yesterday, you can't deny that the world is about to change. It's just weird to think that a normal evening ended with me glued to the TV for hours watching event of the night being reported and projected on CNN. After 2 years of nearly constant "Vote for Obama" ads and messages being thrown at us, it's finally over, in one night. A single night, you'll never see those messages again, until he runs for his next term of course. Everyone remembers where they were when the World Trade Centers went down, will someday people remember when the first black president was elected. Am I going to tell people that I was at Coe College, Armstrong hall, in Micah Nardini's room pretending to be studying for accounting with kids while all we wanted was an excuse to be able to watch the election and pretend we worked on homework? Was yesterday really one of those days?

Election Day

Everyone freak out! That's pretty much what's going on now at Coe College and undoubtedly everywhere else. FREAKING OUT! Calm down people. It's a big day but yelling at people voting for the opposite party is not going to help your cause.
Jesus!
