Halloween Mixer

So my grad program MCDB (Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology) had a halloween mixer at an Irish Restaurant/Bar/Pub near campus. It's a pretty cool place that I went during my interview weekend and watched a few Euro Cup games this summer. It was a lot of fun to hang out with classmates outside of school. Here are a few photos.

Manson Haunted House

So I went to the Manson Reformatory Haunted House with some people from Dr. Wu's lab following the Purdue game. This prison was pretty awesome it is the place Shawshank Redemption was filmed and they put on a pretty awesome show inside. We were inside for about 40 minutes or so and it was definitely a good haunted house.

Clearly terrified at the events that are about to unfold

Game vs Purdue

My apologies for the delays in the posting. Last weekend after getting my midterms back, I needed a fun weekend and I certainly got it. I went out with friends for a bit Friday night and Saturday I went to the game vs Purdue. OSU gave up a touchdown on the first play and things looked bad. After scoring and taking a 7-6 lead (Purdue missed the extra point), they proceeded to return the kickoff and take the lead again. Long story short we were terrible and were down by 8 with about 2 minutes left. After the backup quarterback threw an interception (because Braxton Miller was hurt), I decided to leave the game to try to beat the crowd. I was going to a Haunted House later but more on that later. As I was leaving I walked North by the river along some tailgates and I noticed a small crowd gathered around someone's satellite tv. I noticed that somehow OSU had the ball back and was driving. I watched the remainder of regulation as they drove and scored the tying touchdown with 3 seconds left and made the 2 point conversion to send it to overtime! The TV was on a 7 second delay (thanks Janet Jackson) and so you could hear the crowd roaring before you saw it happen on the tv. Once we scored, I sprinted back into the stadium and amazingly they let me back in and I got better seats than before! OSU scored in OT and Purdue was not able to so we dramatically won the game. I stuck around to sing songs and the OSU team came over to the student section and cheered and sang along. Then the coach, Urban Meyer, came over and riled up the crowd and everyone started chanting his name. Needless to say it was quite the scene and I don't think I'll forget it for a long time to come.

Fall has arrived

A view of the courtyard from my apartment doorstep.

An incredible halftime show

I saw them rehearsing this the other day while playing tennis by the stadium (photos in the previous posts). This was an awesome performance I will watch it over and over again.

I replaced the older link with this one which is in higher quality and has the Script Ohio part where they make the OHIO and dot the I. This is also because of the Nebraska kickers taking the field and getting booed off.

My first Buckeye Game

So Ohio State played Nebraska this Saturday night at the Horseshoe. I bought tickets this summer so I went by myself but the people around me were nice enough. Overall I could feel the place buzzing from well over a mile away and even though the game was at 8 pm when I went into lab at 11 am there were already mobs of fans tailgating. OSU started slow and I feared a long night but the offense kicked into gear and cruised to a convincing 63-38. Here are some photos.

Not sure who this guy is, but he really wanted to take a photo with me.

Photos from Mom and Dad's visit

So I'm a weekend late on these but here are some photos from when my parents visited. Friday I picked my mom up from the airport and showed her my lab and around campus. Then my dad came and we went to El Vaquero for dinner. Saturday we walked around all of campus, went to Short North to visit a friend and see the parks, then we went to the Columbus Crew game. Sunday was more relaxed we went to the Newman center and then had lunch in German Village.

My new toy

So I've been thinking about this for awhile but I decided to buy a juicer for my kitchen. I'm trying to get my fruits and especially vegetables and I saw this as a good way. I asked around for people that had it and settled on this Jack Lalanne model that I bought from Amazon on sale and for free shipping. Obviously everyone knows fruits and vegetables are great for you for many reasons that I may comment on in upcoming posts. Mainly I want to be healthier and have more energy during the day now that I'm in grad school. I do not want to get unhealthy and be addicted to coffee to try to get me through the day.
This is my first concoction (yes I realize it is in a beer glass) made of an orange, some bell peppers, broccoli, grapes, and some carrots. It was very good but from now on I might limit to one fruit because I got a bit of a sugar rush afterwards. More experiments to continue tomorrow.

Lab Photo

This Wednesday during our weekly lab meeting we decided to take a group photo. This is the Li Wu Lab (center 2nd row) working with the HIV virus on the Vet campus. I really like the lab atmosphere and the work that is being done and I hope I get to chance to join for my Ph. D project.

The next two weeks for me are very busy. I have a test in my DNA structures class on Thursday and get the take home test for my Genetic Model Systems class the same day so I am studying hard for both. In addition I will change rotations the Monday after and I still have to solidify who I am working with because my first option fell through. It looks like I will be with a guy named Mamuka who is also working on HIV in a different aspect but we will see.

Comments on the debate that are not about politics

First off I want to apologize for being a terrible blogger. I am going to blame it on midterms and rotation stresses. I have material to write about I will update soon.
I want to comment on the debates without comments on politics. Great points going both ways if you looked past all the heated discussion but one thing that stuck out to me is how much older and grayer obama looks since four years ago when he was running for office. President of the United States is a rough job and I always chuckle a little at how hard people work to get into that position.
In other news I successfully performed my first handstand pushup today (I'm sure it is now your turn to chuckle). Looking to perform more body weight feats in the coming weeks.
